A solar panel generates electricity from light – and it is the only technology that allows a private home to become completely independent of the grid. Altek manufactures and imports photovoltaic modules with capacities ranging from 10 W to 580+ W: monocrystalline, bifacial, flexible and portable. We have warehouses in Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipro, offer an official warranty, and provide delivery throughout Ukraine.

Solar panels: an effective solution for your home or business

The average Ukrainian home consumes 200–400 kWh per month. A system comprising 8–12 solar panels with a capacity of 430–450 W will cover this consumption during sunny periods and significantly reduce bills in winter. The installation pays for itself in 4–7 years, depending on the tariff and operating conditions. Solar panels provide independence from the national grid. By installing them with batteries, you get a fully autonomous energy source that supplies your home with electricity 24/7.

For businesses, the industrial tariff in Ukraine is several times higher than the domestic rate. Even a small solar power plant of 30–50 kW reduces the monthly electricity bill by tens of thousands of hryvnias. Operating for 8–16 hours a day, the system pays for itself within a few years. Furthermore, a solar power plant protects production from emergency power cuts. This is critical for production lines where downtime costs more than the equipment itself.

For a holiday home or an off-grid property, solar panels combined with batteries and a stand-alone inverter provide a full power supply – without the need for a diesel generator or fuel costs.

Solar panels: how they work and where they are used

Each solar panel consists of a set of silicon cells sealed between glass and a polymer film. Photons knock electrons out of the p-n junction, generating a direct current. Several panels are combined into an array and connected to an inverter, which converts DC to 220 V or 380 V AC.

Output depends on the region’s insolation, the tilt angle and the orientation. In Dnipro and the southern regions, a 1 kWp panel generates an average of 1,100–1,400 kWh per year. In the north, it is around 900–1,000 kWh.

Where are photovoltaic modules used:

  • private homes – lower bills and a backup power supply during outages;
  • holiday homes and off-grid properties – self-sufficient power supply;
    farms and agricultural facilities – power for pumps, lighting and ventilation;
  • offices, warehouses and shopping centres – savings on industrial electricity tariffs;
  • industrial solar power stations – partial or full coverage of consumption.

The angle of inclination and south-facing orientation are critical: a deviation of 30° from the optimum reduces annual output by 10–15%.

Photovoltaic modules for solar power stations: main types and specifications

Monocrystalline photovoltaic modules are the market standard this year. They offer an efficiency of 21–23%, stable performance in diffuse light, and a service life of 25–30 years. For most residential properties with limited roof space, this is the optimal choice.

Next are bifacial modules. These additionally capture light reflected from the rear surface. This increases power output by 10–25% when installed above a light-coloured surface. They are popular for ground-mounted installations.

There are also flexible panels. These are mounted on curved surfaces – yachts, campervans, and non-standard roofs. Their efficiency is lower – 14–18%, with a lifespan of up to 15 years, but they weigh 2–4 kg compared to 20+ kg for a standard module.

And portable ones. Foldable 20–200 W panels with USB and MC4 connectors – for charging in the field, tourism, and military applications.

Solar roof tiles are unique. The photovoltaic cells are integrated into the roof’s tempered glass. Visually indistinguishable from ordinary roof tiles, with a service life of 25 years.

How to choose solar panels: key criteria

It is essential to draw up a well-thought-out selection plan and take the following into account:

  • System capacity. For a home with a monthly consumption of 300–400 kWh, a system with a peak capacity of 3–5 kW is required – comprising 7–12 modules of 400–450 W each. In Dnipro, with this capacity, annual energy production will amount to 3,500–5,500 kWh.
  • Efficiency. Where roof space is limited, a 1–2% difference between models is significant. A panel with 22% efficiency takes up 10% less space than a 20% efficiency equivalent with the same power output.
    Temperature coefficient of power. In summer, the surface heats up to 60–70°C and output drops. The closer the coefficient is to zero, the lower the heat-related losses. Typical range for monocrystalline panels: –0.26…–0.35%/°C.
  • Warranties. Product warranty – 10–12 years; power output warranty – 25–30 years (not less than 80% of the rated output). Both documents must be held by the seller.
  • Mechanical load. IEC 61215 standard for Class A – 2400–5400 Pa. For regions with strong winds or heavy snow, select the upper limit of the range.

These are the main criteria. If you’re not entirely sure about the finer points, you can always ask our manager for further details.
